A historic building in Rethymno Old Town, shaped first in the Ottoman period and restored by Anna Galliaki Architects to hold the city's Building Authority.

The restoration keeps what was there and adds quietly, so I photographed the seams. The old timber stair and its worn treads, the patterned cement floors, a plaster ceiling rose on its own, and the new white surfaces and slim metal that meet them.

Restoration work is judged on detail, so the set is built to be looked at closely. It is the record the architects can hand to a magazine or a client without shooting it again.
